Vitamin D Supplements Can Prevent and Treat Breast Cancer

Two new vitamin D studies using a sophisticated form of analysis called meta-analysis, in which data from multiple reports is combined, have revealed new prescriptions for possibly preventing up to half of the cases of breast cancer and two-thirds of the cases of colorectal cancer in the United States. The work was conducted by a core team of cancer prevention specialists at the Moores Cancer Center at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and colleagues from both coasts.

These two studies are in addition to the more than 60 epidemiology studies conducted over the last 30 years that have indicated that Vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of more than 16 different types of cancer.

The new research indicates that keeping your Vitamin D3 blood serum levels at 60- 80 ng/ml makes it difficult for breast cells to mutate, the first step in the development of cancer, and that maintaining a level of 60-80 ng/ml of vitamin D3 in your blood will result in a 75% reduction in the number of deaths from invasive cancer and 50,000 fewer cases of invasive breast cancer per year in North America, beginning in 2012.

The breast cancer study, published online in the current issue of the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, pooled dose-response data from two earlier studies – the Harvard Nurses Health Study and the St. George’s Hospital Study – and found that individuals with the highest blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, had the lowest risk of breast cancer.

Comparing women with the lowest and highest levels of vitamin D, there was a almost a 70% reduction of the risk of developing breast cancer in those with the highest levels.

Breast cancer patients with low levels of vitamin D and followed for up to eleven years had a 70% greater chance of dying and twice the rate of developing metastasis than did patients with high levels of vitamin D.

A placebo controlled study has now confirmed these findings. In the study Vitamin D supplements reduced the incidence of cancer was reduced by as much as 77% compared to patients who were given placebo (sugar pill).

In an additional  study, Yin L and colleagues from the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany conducted a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies on the association between serum vitamin D and the risk of breast cancer; simply put, they found that deficient concentrations of the vitamin in the blood was linked to a higher risk of the disease.

For the study, Yin and colleagues identified ten relevant studies on the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and breast cancer incidence or mortality from patient information published until Sep 2009 by major medicine databases.

An increase of 25(OH)D by 20 ng/mL was found associated with a 41 percent, 8 percent and 27 percent reduction in the breast cancer risk in case-control studies, nested case-control studies and both study designs combined, respectively.

The findings were published in the Sep 2010 issue of the European Journal of Cancer.

Another meta-analysis led by Chen P and colleagues from Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences – Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai resulted in a similar conclusion.

How does vitamin d prevent against breast cancer?

When you have enough vitamin D3 in your blood, breast cells stick together, blocking single cells from mutating and reproducing or stopping tumors from ever forming.

Vitamin D can kill existing breast cancer cells as well

New research conducted by researchers at the State University of New York at Albany have found that a potent form of vitamin D works to kill breast cancer cells.

Researchers have found that increasing serum levels of vitamin D may improve the prognosis for breast cancer patients. Although little is known about the exact mechanisms involved, emerging evidence suggests a particular protein sequence is involved.

JoEllen Welsh, a researcher with the State University of New York at Albany, has studied the effects of vitamin D for 25 years.

Part of her research involves taking human breast cancer cells and treating them with a potent form of vitamin D.

Within a few days, half the cancer cells shriveled up and died. Welsh said the vitamin has the same effect as a drug used for breast cancer treatment.

“What happens is that vitamin D enters the cells and triggers the cell death process,” researcher JoEllen Welsh said in an ABC News article. Further, when breast cancer cells were injected into mice, then treated with vitamin D, tumors shrank by an average of 50 percent, and some disappeared altogether. The results were similar with other types of tumors as well, including colon and prostate.

Sunshine on your skin equals Vitamin D3.  Your body stores it, but if you go a long time without enough, your whole body gets depleted of Vitamin D. If your cells don’t get enough, you are more prone to get breast cancer, and it’s more likely to spread.

Taking a vitamin D3 supplement product may be the single most important thing  you can do to prevent breast cancer.
