The Benefits of Turmeric – Curcumin for Treating Crohn’s Disease

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a spice and food coloring related to the ginger family and a common ingredient of curry is a staple of traditional medicine in both India and China.

Curcumin is an active ingredient in turmeric with great medicinal values. Curcumin, the main biologically active phytochemical compound of turmeric is extracted, concentrated, standardized and researched for its well-known range of disease preventing properties. The bright yellow color of the curry powder is mainly due to the presence of Curcumin.

Turmeric, a medicinal herb related to ginger, has been used for centuries as a treatment for dozens of common ailments, including digestive problems and inflammation.

How is Turmeric effective for Crohn’s disease?

1. Turmeric reduces inflammation

Extensive research during last 50 years has proven the anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin contained in turmeric.

Crohn’s disease is a pro-inflammatory disease. All current drugs approved for Crohn’s disease have anti-inflammatory activity.

Curcumin can inhibit both the activity and the synthesis of cyclooxygenase-2 and 5-lipooxygenase; and other enzymes that have been implicated in inflammation related to Crohn’s disease.

Turmeric decreases congestion and inflammation in the mucus membranes. The mucus membranes, which coat the stomach and intestines as well as the throat and lungs, are vulnerable to swelling and irritation in the face of conditions such as Crohn’s. How to take Turmeric for Crohn’s disease

Curcumin has a poor bioavailability (absorption) when consumed orally due to its rapid metabolism in the liver and intestinal wall.

In order for curcumin to be maximally effective against crohn’s disease, it MUST be introduced into the body in a bioavailable form. Turmeric is a fat-soluble substance. It is therefore almost totally insoluble in water.

Suggested use: Take 1,200 milligrams daily, divided into three doses. Curcumin taken on an empty stomach is more effective than with the meals. Thus it is recommended that you take curcumin 1 hour before meals.

As an alternative, Use Turmeric powder.

Purchase pure Turmeric powder. You can add it to vegetable or rice dishes, and just 1/4 to 1/3 of a teaspoon per day is all you need for tremendous positive effects.

Include 2 large tea spoons of turmeric powder into all foods with a little olive oil, everyday. In order for it to work, turmeric powder should be always mixed with an oil, this way the body absorbs it into its fatty tissues.

Doses can range from 450 milligrams of curcumin capsules to 3 grams of turmeric root daily, divided into several doses, taken by mouth. As a tea, 1 to 1.5 grams of dried root may be steeped in 150 milliliters of water for 15 minutes and taken twice daily.

For many people it’s easier to take the main active ingredient, curcumin, in supplements.

Important note: Dissolve the turmeric powder in oil cream or butter.

The body’s absorption of turmeric is enhanced when dissolved in oils and butter. Curcumin dissolves readily in coconut milk or cream, especially if they are warm. Curcumin that is dissolved in fat will be introduced into the lymphatic system with the fat. There is exactly where you want curcumin to be introduced into the body. The lymphatic fluid bathes all the tissues in the body. You are NOT interested in directly introducing it into the blood.

Note: There is NO reason to boil coconut milk or cream in order to dissolve curcumin. Heating the curcumin to high temperatures can weaken the potency of the curcumin.

I you are irritated by the the taste of curcumin, add other spices to the mix to change the taste.
