Topical Onion and Garlic Extracts Can Stop Hair Loss
For men and women of all ages, two common household staples onions and garlic hold a hidden power. Studies have shown that the powerful stench of onion and garlic juices might be capable of bringing more than a tear to ones eye.
1. Onion juice
Recent studies have shown that by simply rubbing onion juice on ones head, it is possible to generate hair growth and prevent future hair loss.
Cited in the Journal of Dermatology, one study in particular tested the efficacy of onion juice as an antidote to the common menace of hair loss, or alopecia.
This study was designed to test the effectiveness of topical crude onion juice in the treatment of patchy alopecia areata in comparison with tap water.
Twenty-three people with alopecia areata applied the onion juice twice daily for two months, and 15 people applied tap water twice daily for two months.
Re-growth of terminal coarse hairs started after two weeks of treatment with crude onion juice. At four weeks, hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients (73.9%), and, at six weeks, the hair re-growth was observed in 20 patients (86.9%) and was significantly higher among males (93.7%) compared to females (71.4%). In the tap-water treated-control group, hair re-growth was apparent in only 2 patients (13%) at 8 weeks of treatment with no sex difference. The present study showed that the use of crude onion juice gave significantly higher results with regard to hair re-growth than did tap water, and that it can be an effective topical therapy for patchy alopecia areata.
How can onion juice stop hair loss?
Onions contain a number of important minerals and vitamins, such as vitamins C and B6, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and germanium. Onions also have a high Sulfur content. The high amounts of sulfur in onions make them particularly effective in regenerating hair follicles and stimulating hair re-growth.
Sulfur, known as “the beauty mineral,” is necessary for your health as well as for stimulating your hair growth. Your hair is made primarily of sulfur, protein and water. Sulfur increases the circulation of your scalp, nourishing your hair follicles.
Suggested use:
Quarter an onion, put it in a blender for a few minutes then squeeze the juice out through a strainer. Put it in a little bottle with an eye dropper for easy application. The juice keeps for about two weeks, three if you put a few drops of lemon juice in it.
Apply the freshly-squeezed, raw onion juice directly onto the scalp, massage deep into the scalp and hair roots. Leave on the scalp for about half-an-hour before shampooing.
To reduce the strong onion odor which can be quite irritating, mix 1 teaspoon of fresh onion juice with several teaspoons of apple juice. This helps dramatically. The strong smell is reduced by ~ 85% instantly. Rub this blend in your scalp, keep for 25-30 minutes and then wash away with the shampoo.
When will you notice results?
In most cases, regular onion treatments will result in dramatic improvement of hair thickness within just several months.
2. Garlic juice
Massaging garlic oil on the scalp and leaving it on overnight stimulates hair growth, according to a group of nurses specializing in hair-loss treatments.
Garlic can stimulate the flow of blood to the scalp, thereby nourishing the hair, and thus encouraging hair to grow and strengthen, rather than falling out, breaking off, and leaving us bald or balding.
Garlic is rich with natural compounds and substances that wield anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antibiotic properties. And that’s exactly what’s needed to improve the condition of your scalp and revive the growth of hair, which may be affected by different fungi or bacteria.
Garlic contains 33 sulfur compounds, 17 amino acids, and many other vitamins and minerals. Depending on how garlic is handled depicts which compound is released.
Suggested use:
An hour before bedtime, apply garlic directly to your scalp before bedtime. One hour before you sleep, cut open a clove of garlic and rub all over your scalp. Squeeze the clove as you rub to release the garlic’s juice. After an hour, massage your scalp well with olive oil. Sleep with a plastic shower cap, or cover your pillow with a towel. Shampoo in the morning. Repeat this remedy for a few weeks, and hopefully hair will stop falling out and re-grow.
Tip: The more sulfur in your garlic, the more benefits you may reap, so make sure you’re buying the best garlic around. At the grocery store, pick out the freshest, strongest-smelling garlic you can find. The stronger the smell, the higher the sulfur content. Organic garlic is thought to have a higher sulfur content than regular garlic.
Better yet, Use a prepared garlic extract product
A much more practical and convenient way to apply garlic to your scalp is by using a prepared garlic extract product.
Massage the garlic extract directly onto your scalp at bedtime. Massaging your fingers through your scalp will increase your circulation making it easier for the nutrients from the garlic to reach your roots and feed your strands.
I would highly recommend the odorless garlic extract productproduced by the Kyolic Company. Their products are world famous for their purity and potency.
Common-sense tip:
Common-sense would dictate that you start the onion/garlic treatment when you notice thinning of your hair. Once your hair has completely fallen out It is most probably to late.
