Curcumin, an Extract of Turmeric Can Prevent and Stop the Growth of Pancreatic Cancer Tumors
Several studies have proven that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric can stop the growth of human pancreatic cancer cells.
Researchers found that curcumin inhibited the production of interlukin-8, a protein produced by white blood cells that contributes to pancreatic cancer tumor growth.
Curcumin, a compound in the spice turmeric, temporarily stopped advanced pancreatic cancer growth in two patients and substantially reduced the size of a tumor in another patient, according to a small study published July 15 in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.
A study published in the April 2006 edition of the journal, Cancer showed that the phytochemical,curcumin that gives turmeric its yellow color also endows this common spice with cancer fighting properties.
Previous research has shown that curcumin helps to prevent breast cancer but this latest study demonstrates that it also has the ability to inhibit the growth of pancreatic cancer cells.
The American and Chinese authors of the paper found that curcumin both stimulates apoptosis (programmed cell death) in prostate cancer cells and inhibits the growth of these malignant cells.
This is further confirmation of turmeric’s indispensible role as one of our most valuable cancer preventing foods and affirms the role of spices as an important dietary source of anticancer compounds.
“The effects of curcumin were encouraging,” says the study’s principal investigator, Razelle Kurzrock, M.D., chair of M. D. Anderson’s Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics (Phase I clinical trial program). “It showed activity in patients, and there were no side effects.”
In the study, patients received 8 grams of curcumin by mouth every day for two months. Maintenance therapy was continued at the same dose and schedule until the disease progressed.
Twenty-five patients were reported in the paper. Of those patients, curcumin resulted in:
Prolonged stable disease: Two patients temporarily experienced no significant tumor growth; one for eight months and another patient for just over 2.5 years (an additional 12 months after the study was compiled for publication).
One patient experienced a decrease in tumor size of 73%, although the tumor grew back soon afterward.
No side effects were observed in patients.
A concern before starting the study was that curcumin normally is poorly absorbed, meaning that only low levels get into the bloodstream after the capsule form has been taken by mouth.
“Therefore, the fact that low levels of curcumin resulted in benefits in the study, even in a small number of patients, suggests that if we could find a better way to administer curcumin and get it to the tumor, we could see a greater response,” Kurzrock says.
The fact that curcumin had any effect on patients with pancreatic cancer, which is difficult to treat successfully, is significant to Bharat Aggarwal, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Experimental Therapeutics.
“The results are important,” says Aggarwal, a laboratory scientist who has studied curcumin as a potential cancer-fighting agent in cancer cells and mice for nearly 20 years.
Turmeric absorption issues
As was mentioned in the previous paragraph, test tube studies reveal consistently positive results with Turmeric , but it’s just not absorbed very well by the body. Decades worth of research indicate that this potential superstar has relatively poor bioavailability.

Researchers have found that combining turmeric with fish oils might have a cumulative effect, enhancing the cancer-fighting abilities of both substances.
The results of a 2008 published study using a combination of curcumin and Omega-3 fish oil demonstrated a four to eight-fold increase in cancer cell death compared to using these compounds separately. The mice with pancreatic cancer experienced a 70% decrease in the size of their tumors after using this combination
Anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal medications (NSAIDs) are typically used to deal with the inflammatory response which occurs when pancreatic cancer is developing. However these drugs often introduce complications including serious heart problems. Natural compounds like curcumin and Omega-3 fatty acids (which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties on their own) were studied to see if combining them would enhance their cancer-fighting benefits.
First, the researchers tested out the effects of curcumin and the omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on pancreatic cancer cells in the laboratory. Then, the researchers fed mice with pancreatic cancer tumors fish oil and curcumin separately, and together. The fatty acids reduced the tumor growth by 25 percent, and the curcumin by 43 percent. But when the two were combined, they reduced tumor growth by more than 70 percent. Both the fish oil and curcumin also reduced the activity of inflammation factors that are known to decrease survival in pancreatic cancer patients.
