The Benefits of Resveratrol for Preventing and Treating Breast Cancer
Studies have shown that Resveratrol found in red grapes and red wine, suppresses abnormal cell formation that leads to most types of breast cancer, according to U.S. researchers. The compound, resveratrol, is sold in extract form as a dietary supplement.
What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a phytoestrogen. These are more commonly called dietary estrogens and are found in plants. There is evidence that suggests that phytoestrogens prevent the formation of breast and prostate cancers which are caused by hormonal imbalances. Cardiovascular diseases and menopausal symptoms are also regulated by the intake of phytoestrogens. Epidemiological studies have shown protective and preventive effects against breast cancer.
How does Resveratrol help fight breast cancer?
Breast cancer forms through a multi-stage process that differs depending on the type of disease, a person’s genes, and other factors. However, it’s known that increased estrogen fuels many types of breast cancer.
Prolonged exposure to estrogen is a major risk factor for breast cancer. Most research has focused on the interactions between estrogen and estrogen receptors on breast cancer cells.
When the body’s system for processing estrogen gets out of balance, dangerous estrogen metabolites appear. These toxic compounds react with DNA in breast cells and jump-start the growth of tumors.
Resveratrol has the ability to prevent the first step that occurs when estrogen starts the process that leads to cancer by blocking the formation of the estrogen DNA adducts. “We believe that this could stop the whole progression that leads to breast cancer down the road,” said study author Eleanor G. Rogan, a professor in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
In laboratory testing, Rogan and her team found that as little as 10 umol/L of resveratrol could suppress DNA adducts associated with breast cancer. A glass of red wine contains between 9 and 28 umol/L of resveratrol.
Rogan and colleagues also found that reseveratrol suppressed expression of CYP1B1 and the formation of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, two known risk factors for breast cancer.
Resveratrol induces an enzyme called quinone reductase, which reduces the estrogen metabolite back to inactive form and reduces breast cancer risk, Rogan explained.
The findings, which are in the July issue of Cancer Prevention Research, will have to be confirmed in human trials, she noted.
It is not known whether high intakes of resveratrol can help prevent breast cancer in humans. Clinical trials are currently underway to address this question and to also determine whether resveratrol might be beneficial in breast cancer treatment.
Studies on human metabolism of resveratrol suggest that even very high dietary intakes of resveratrol may not result in tissue levels that are high enough to realize most of the protective effects demonstrated in cell culture studies.
Resveratrol bioavailability issues
When taking any type of pill or capsule, the absorption of the product is very important. If the supplement you are taking is not absorbed You want to make sure that the product has a delivery system that maximizes the amount that gets into your bloodstream. Different products are more bio-available than others when taken orally. This can be a concern with resveratrol. Although trans-resveratrol appears to be well-absorbed by humans when taken orally, its bioavailability is relatively low due to its rapid metabolism and elimination.
Take a micronized resveratrol product to ensure maximum absorption into the body.
Micronization is the process where the particles of a substance are reduced to an incredibly small level, therefore dramatically increasing its absorption rate. It is estimated that micronized resveratrol can improve the absorption up to 500% when compared to the non-micronized version.
The only micronized resveratrol product that I would recommend is RevGenetics Nitro 250 Micronized 99% Resveratrol Supplement.
Numerous laboratory tests have shown that RevGenetics Nitro 250 Micronized 99% Resveratrol Supplement is the the purest and contains the most absorbable resveratrol.
RevGenetics is a well respected company within the anti-aging community, and backs up their products was legitimate scientific research.
Each X500 capsule contains 500mg of the highest purity Resveratrol (99% Pure) and is tested to be some of the safest on the market.
RevGenetics tests all of their material in an independent lab that is certified internationally.
RevGenetics may not be the cheapest out there, but they strive to be the purest and have the most absorbable resveratrol.
