Fish Oil Supplements Can Treat the Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Many recent double-blind studies have shown that supplementation of the diet with 10-12 grams of fish oils daily results in significant improvement in the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Researchers found the patients taking fish oils experienced a major improvement in hand strength. And at 12 weeks of treatment they experienced decreased joint pain.
Looking at the patients six months later, the two groups taking fish oils saw even more improvements. They found it easier to bend over and pick items off the floor and there was a delayed onset of fatigue. They also found it easier to get in and out of the car.
Researchers concluded that omega 3 fish oils offer pain relief from arthritis. There was a marked improvement in these patients’ quality of life which makes all the difference in the world.
What is fish oil?
Fish oil is the oil found in the meat of certain fish. These fish are referred to as ‘oily fish’.
Cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies are the richest food source of omega-3 fatty acids. But instead of eating more fish which contain mercury, PCBs, and other chemicals, fish oil capsules are considered a cleaner source of omega-3 fatty acids. Many companies filter their fish oil so that these chemicals are removed.
Don’t seed oils also contain omega-3 oils?
Although some vegetable and seed oils can be a source of essential fatty acids, humans don’t convert these to omega-3′s very well.
Flax oil for example is a good source of omega 3 oils, but in a form which must be converted by the body to be used. If there is a problem with the conversion an EPA/DHA supplement is much more beneficial.
For this reason, it is difficult to obtain therapeutic amounts of omega-3′s from vegetable oils. Fish oils however, are a source of pre-formed omega-3 essential fatty acids so all the hard work has already been done!
How is fish oil beneficial for arthritis?
Fish oil can significantly diminish the production and effectiveness of various prostaglandins which are naturally occurring hormone-like substances that accentuate inflammation.
Researchers found that the body converts a fatty acid in fish oils into a powerful anti-inflammatory chemical called resolvin D2.
It is this compound that accounts for the ability of the oil found in fish such as salmon and mackerel to combat diseases.
Mauro Perretti, Professor of Immunopharmacology at Queen Mary, University of London, said: “We have known for some time that fish oils can help with conditions like arthritis which are linked to inflammation. What we’ve shown here is how the body processes a particular ingredient of fish oils into Resolvin D2. We’ve also looked in detail at this chemical, determining at least some of the ways it relieves inflammation. It seems to be a very powerful chemical and a small amount can have a large effect.”
