Capsaicin Can Prevent and Stop Prostate Cancer

Capsaicin, the pungent alkaloid in jalapeños and other Chile peppers that makes them hot, not only puckers the mouth and burns the tongue but also drives prostate cancer cells to kill themselves off, according to studies published in the March 15 issue of Cancer Research.

In clinical studies conducted in Japan, England and the United States, capsaicin, the critical secondary metabolite compound found in cayenne pepper, has been shown to cause cancer cells to undergo “apoptosis” a form of cellular self-termination or suicide, if you will.

A recent study conducted by researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center shows that capsaicin slowed down the development of prostate tumors and activated cell death for cancerous cells.

What is capsaicin?

Capsaicin is the key component of peppers of the Capsicum genus of the Solanaceae family of which cayenne pepper is a member.

It is a chemical compound that stimulates the chemoreceptor nerve endings and in your mucous membranes. Furthermore, capsaicin is a compound that is among the group of capsaicinoids and are produced as a secondary metabolite by chili peppers.

It’s the capsaicin that makes cayenne pepper hot, and it’s the capsaicin that causes mucus membranes to react.

In 2006, a team of researchers from the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, found that capsaicin induced 80 percent of human prostate cancer cells growing in mice to follow pathways leading to certain death. They also found that prostate cancer tumors in mice fed with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in non-treated mice. Additionally, capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on cultured human cancer cells according to a scientist at the UCLA School of Medicine. It dramatically slowed the development of prostate tumors formed by cells from the same lines as those grown for the mouse models.

In an article entitled, “Hot Pepper Kills Prostate Cancer Cells in Study” as published in Reuters on March 16, 2006, Dr. Soren Lehmann of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine said the following, “Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture.” It caused 80 percent of the prostate cancer cells growing in mice to “commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis.” Additionally, researchers said the capsaicin in Cayenne Pepper “dramatically slowed the development of prostate tumors formed by those human cell lines grown in mouse models.”

The study was not conducted on humans, but was instead conducted on mice that had been genetically modified to have human prostate cancer cells. The mice were given a healthy dose of pepper extract, 400 milligrams of capsaicin three times a week.

UK prostate experts say capsaicin could be the basis of a future drug but warned eating too many hot peppers has been linked to stomach cancer.

The study authors conclude that, “In summary, our data suggests that capsaicin, or a related analogue, may have a role in the management of prostate cancer.”

If you will ask why the study was conducted on mice and not on humans, the question remains unanswered at this time and will in most probability remain that way for the foreseeable future………………
