Bitter Melon Nutrients Can Fight Type 2 Diabetes

A study that appeared in the online issue of Chemistry and Biology, has isolated four compounds in bitter melon that activate an enzyme that is responsible for regulating metabolism and transporting glucose from the blood into the cells. Isolating these compounds could lead to medications that someday could control obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The nutritional value of bitter melon is due to its high mineral and vitamin content. Bitter melon contains essential minerals such as calcium, potassium, copper, iron, and also vitamins A, b1 and b2.

The hypoglycemic effect is more pronounced in the fruit of Bitter Melon where these chemicals are found in the highest quantity.

Bitter melon contains the constituents polypeptide-P, vicine and charantin, which are thought to be responsible for bitter melon’s effects in reducing blood sugar levels. Specifically, these properties in bitter melon appear to boost glucose tolerance and support proper glucose absorption, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Polypeptide-P appears to produce insulin-like effects, but this constituent seems to act together with charantin and vicine to lower blood sugar levels, says the University of Michigan Health System.

How to use bitter melon for type 2 diabetes

Use fresh squeezed bitter melon juice from fresh bitter melons . Bitter melons are available in most Asia produce markets and special food stores in the United States.

The fresh fruit juice of bitter melon can improve you blood sugar tolerance in type2 diabetics due to its ingredients, oleanolic acid glucosides. Also, these components can intensify the insulin production from the pancreas, due to the raise in beta cells (responsible for insulin production).

Juice the melons by inserting them into a juicing machine or liquefying the entire fruit in a blender. Use about 4 to 5 bitter melons per serving.
